Looting...

I was watching the news yesterday and saw that there's a big hullabaloo about the looting in New Orleans.

I'm just wondering why they even care that people are looting at this point. I can't believe they are dedicating law enforcement officers to "imprisoning" the law breakers when they know they don't have a jail to take them to anyway. Couldn't those officers be of better use actually rescuing people who are drowning or stuck in their 100 degree attics?

Looting during the LA riots was one thing. Those buildings/businesses' goods would have been unharmed and marketable otherwise. But all of the stuff in New Orleans is going to ruin anyway. The whole city is filling with water, there's no electricity to keep the frozen foods frozen, etc. They're not going to be able to sell that box of Fruity Pebbles after the box gets all soggy. And for goodness sake, if they need those packages of diapers, let them have them! I can't even imagine having to care for an infant in such a dire situation without having had time to grab enough diapers for several weeks.

They should just give it all away and be done with it and feel good that maybe they helped someone out.

Tomorrow we're having a "jeans day for charity" at work where we will donate money to the Red Cross (and another company in town is matching out donations), and we'll get to wear jeans. I'm glad they're doing this and I'm really glad that our donations will be matched.
