I was thinking of this when I was drying my hair this morning.
Sunday in Sunday School we were talking about Hebrews and the verses about favoritism. I really like those verses. Anyway, one of our study questions was to compare favoritism and preference and determine if there was any difference between favoring something and prefering something. There were several questions about favoritism.
Then suddenly this one guy (nicknamed by some in the class "big boy") starts a sentence with "I'm not a racist person, but..."
And I thought...I've never heard a person start a sentence like that who WASN'T racist. If you have to start a sentence with, "I'm not racist, but", chances are you really are and probably aren't fooling anyone but yourself. Tacking that on to the beginning of the sentence doesn't negate the assanine remainder of the sentence. People are just crazy.
One time, I was in a group of people that I didn't know very well. One guy started a sentence with something like, "I don't mean this bad, but..." (that's very similar to the thought above. If you have to start a sentence like that, what you're about to say is probably not edifying) And he said that he didn't understand why people still talked about racism being a problem when times have changed and now there's affirmative action and stuff like that. And I thought, "As long as there is a group of WASP people sitting around talking about how people who talk about racism are just over-reacting, racism is probably alive and well."
