The Body of Christopher Creed by Carol Plum-Ucci

It's difficult to believe that this is a first novel.

In this YA novel, we meet Torey. He's one of the most popular kids in his high school and hangs out with his clique without really questioning the things they do or talk about.

Then one day the biggest misfit in school (Christopher) goes missing and the only clue he leaves in regards to his whereabouts is a cryptic e-mail sent to the school principal that says he knows the other students would prefer him to be dead or just disappear and that he wishes he had been born as one of the popular kids. He goes on to list some of the popular kids that he thinks have perfect lives and mentions Torey by name. This eats away at Torey.

The characters' small town and school is turned upside down as everyone tries to figure out whether Christopher's note means he has killed himself, or if he has just run away. If Christopher has killed himself, where is the body?

This book is excellent. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes the YA or mystery genre.

Themes explored in this book:

Popularity
Bullies
The impact that words can have on a person
Sexual promiscuity
Getting to know someone before judging them
