The Well of Lost Plots by Jasper Fforde

"Mongoose!" yelled Humpty, drawing a small revolver and throwing himself on to the ground where, unluckily for him, there just happened to be a muddy puddle.
"You're mistaken," explained Grundy wearily, "It's a guide dog. Put the gun away before you hurt yourself."

So Lola sat while I brushed her hair and she nattered on about a weight-loss idea she had had, which seemed to revolve around weighing yourself with one foot on the scale and one on the floor. Using this idea, she told me, she could lose as much weight as she wanted and not give up cakes. -- page 205

"It could tear a hole straight through The Scarlet Letter at that rate," exploded Bradshaw, "and litter the whole book with dramatic events!"
The consequence of this was terrible to consider--a new version of The Scarlet Letter where things actually happen.

If you like Christian fiction, such as the Narnia Chronicles, may I suggest another title to try? "Outcasts of Skagaray" by Andrew Clarke, was written out of concern for the plight of unwanted children. It is a an action adventure story. For sample chapters see www.threeswans.com.au
Happy reading!
